Why Male Initial?

Children are given names when they are born. But only their father’s name is used as their initial. Both father and mother have equal rights in giving birth to the child. Then why this indiscrimination of women?

Man and woman are equal in creation. In giving birth to a child, though father has an important part to play, it is the woman that bears all the pains of pregnancy and labor.
Yet only the father’s name is used for the initial of the child. Why do they neglect the mother’s part in naming the child?

Woman has a respectful place in India. India is even called as Bharath Matha (Mother Bharath). All the rivers flowing in India are called by names of women. The names of rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Kaveri, etc. are names of women only. But still the initial of the name of the child is only that of the father.
